#1. ) What have you learned and/or re-learned in the last 4 weeks of our sessions? (Specifically identify the concepts, principles, and skills in public speaking that you have learned and/or re-learned)
I have learned a lot already in the couple of weeks of being in speech, one of the most important things I learned were how to set up my speeches. I always have a hard time starting up speeches or even finding a topic that I like, but I learned Tips for Selecting a Speech Topic in class. For example you should choose something that interests you, pick a side and have an opinion (unless it is an informative speech) and lastly making sure your audience understands your opinion. Another thing that I learned that is very important is being prepared for your speech. I re- learned how important it is to be prepared and looked more into it because I want to be ready when it comes to my presentation . This class showed me how important speaking is. What we learn in this class will help us outside of school, like a job or an interview.
Most important things I learned that I will use.
- Making sure the audience can hear and understand me
- Making sure they understand my opinion/information.
- Be interested in what I am presenting
- Ask questions to keep the audience thinking and interested
- Have a video in my speech
- Practice before I present so I don’t mess up
- Use a format to set up my speech using K.I.S.S or any other technique we learned.
- Staying on topic in my speeches. I can wonder off with other ideas if I don’t stay on point.
#2 ) Have your learning techniques, time management, and learning attitude been effective in this course? If yes, why do you say so? If not, why do you think so?
My learning techniques did have been effective in this course. I am a visual learner and this class to me is very hands on and helps me understand what is going on and what I should do. The activities that we have done also helped me a lot because the directions are always very clear and that also helps me learn when I know what I am doing in the class room. My time management has also been effective because this class prepares me to be ready for my speeches so that I am not freaking out about what I should do/ have to do. The class prepares me to do my speeches well and effectively. My learning attitude has been very effective because this class feels like a safe environment. Also I am not frustrated with what to do and how to do it because exercises in class and groups really helps me know what I want to do and how I want to do it.
#3) Are your instructor’s teaching style and approach , as well design of learning lessons and learning activities effective and able to help you learn and/or relearn things in speech communication? WHY do you think or say so?
Yes, I do believe that my instructors teaches techniques are very helpful for me as a student. The approach on learning how to make presentations were very clear. When we learned about citing our sources she helped me understand better on what to do. The learning activities that we have done were a lot of fun and very helpful. The instructor is also very good in making the class a safe environment so no one feels judged or left out. I feel like I learned a lot more things about speaking and how I can improve myself from speaking with more of the learning activities.
REFLECTIVE JOURNAL 2 Week 10
1. What have you learned further after having watched and evaluated others deliver their speeches and after having delivered and evaluated your own speech performance? (10 points)
What I have learned further after watching and evaluating others deliver their speeches is to make eye contact with your audience. It makes the audience understand what you are saying rather than looking down and reading off a piece of paper. Also speaking clearly helps a lot with the speakers that we evaluated. The speakers that we have evaluated also used sound effects to tell their story or get their points across. After delivering my own speech I felt like I was rushing myself so I could just go sit down. I got nervous and I shouldn’t have. At least now I know to slow down and take my time to get my point across. I evaluated that the speakers did not rush their speeches as much as I did. I think that I made good eye contact throughout my speech. My performance all together was not that bad I just have to slow down.
2. What have you learned working closely with your teammates in planning, managing, hosting, speaking and evaluation sessions? (10 points)
One thing that I learned about working closely with my teammates was that we all have the same personalities. Having the same personalities helps us out a lot. We like to have fun with our speeches and still do a good job. Planning wise with our team is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. We are pretty good with planning because everyone texts everyone and we somehow pull together and make things work. My group became my friends which is pretty good to say. Our speaking and evaluation sessions are pretty good also. We look at what we can fix and what we can do better next time.
3. Whose informative speech stands out the most? Why do you think so? (3 points)
The girl with that spoke about going green with solar power. She stood out most to me because she had videos proving her information. Her presentation had a lot of information that was explained very well with pictures. She also had good speaking skills. She looked at her audience, she spoke clearly, and the audience could tell what she was trying to inform us about.
4. During the speech delivery programs or sessions, who do you think have executed strong leadership skills? (2 points)
I think that joel had really good leadership skills during class and out of class. I also think that Megan has really good leadership skills because she usually gets things going in our group. Our group thinks of the creative ideas and she put it all together to make sense, and if anyone had a question about the project she would email the instructor to help us understand better of what we are suppose to do.
5. Who among your classmates have shown strong collaboration skills? (2 points)
I think that Erik has every good collaboration skills. He has come a long way. He is very creative and understanding of things that are going on.
6. Whose evaluations from your classmates you’ve found most helpful for you and for everyone else? WHY? (3 points)
I think that jon’s evaluations were most helpful for me and probably most of the class. He makes things less tense and makes things more funny and happy. I think he makes the environment of the class brighter.

Journal 3
I feel that in this class I have achieved a lot more than I thought I would. I believe that I disserve four stars. I think this because; I’ve worked very hard from the beginning of the semester. I felt that this class was going to make me so nervous and scared. But in the end I gained confidence by picking topics that interest me and my classmates. Also I made sure my topics stayed focused on my major Criminal justice. The effort I put in my speeches in my opinion were pretty good. I spent time going over them with family members and finding pictures to make my presentation more appealing. Also I would spend time looking up videos to also help me get my point across. Strategies I used were trying to stay organized and focused but most of all knowledge. Knowledge on a topic is so important. The more you know what you are talking about the more your audience can understand and learn from your topic. What I could have done to achieve a higher star would be working on saying “um” and “uh” it is something that is very hard for me to stop. Also I could have read and understood emails better so I wouldn’t be confused on what was due.
Performed learning activities or tasks, assignments, and speeches on time (as per our
Scheduled Plan of Activities)
My speeches were always on time. I always tried my best to do a good performance. By doing a good performance I would look back on the demonstration power points and pull in different things. When I would give a speech I would also look back at questions we were asked in class, such as what makes a good speaker. I always worked on my presentations the night they are do so that I am prepared to deliver a well put together speech.
Executed effective communication, collaboration and/or leadership skills
I believe my leadership skills are pretty strong. Not as strong as some people in the class. I always went first with my speeches and I didn’t really have a problem with it. When I have things well planned out then I could give 100%. But if it is a speech that we have to do randomly in front of the class I get nervous and want to say whatever I have to say as fast as I can. I do that because I want to be confident about what I am talking about otherwise I feel like I am making things up.
Rendered well-thought out speeches, reflections, and work output
I think that my speeches are very well thought out. I make sure that I get a topic that would make people wonder and understand better. With my reflections I haven’t really been up to date with them but on my first speech on tasers I felt I did a great job. I wanted my speech to be something that could interest everyone. I felt that I needed to look at my audience a lot more. I felt like with each speech I had a lot of confidence. With my second speech about joe apieros prison, I knew a lot about it so it was easy for me to talk about. I also knew a lot about tasers. With my second speech I think I was less nervous but I should have mentally prepared better because I was up late that night. My work output is usually good. When I do something I don’t really just put down one word answers and with all the reflections I did on other peoples speeches I would also comment a lot.
Fulfilled the ethical requirements of public speaking (AVOID: plagiarism, ethnocentrism, egocentrism, and commission of fallacies)
I believe I fulfilled the ethical requirements of public speaking. I feel like there could be some things I could improve on and I will just have to work harder to achieve that. I work cited my presentations very well I feel that was something I did very well on. Plagiarism is no joke.
Overcame speech anxiety or fear and other undesirable communication habits
I do believe I overcame a lot from this speech class. I was terrified to take this course and know I am so glad I did. I had so much fear but my fear went away after the first speech. When I am confident about what I am presenting I almost get excited to share what I learned and what I know. My classmates really helped me a lot also. They weren’t rude and seemed to be interested in whatever I was talking about. A major part of speech is definitely the audience the harder the audience the more nervous you will be. At first when I would go up to talk I would want to say it fast so I could just sit down but my instructor taught us not to be afraid and if we did make it short she would ask us questions to help us out.
Reflected well on your learning process and learning accomplishments and be able to present valuable learning output or accomplishments (PORTFOLIO Presentation)
My learning process was to do well in the activities we had in class and watch what other people were doing. Watching my classmates deliver strong speeches made me want to deliver just a strong speeches. My learning accomplishments would definitely have to be the structure of my presentation.
Maintained positive attitude, practiced positive core values, and philosophy in life and show appreciation of the value of lessons learned in this course to one’s personal, academic and professional goals.
I always maintained a positive attitude. I feel like I am always laughing and I am generally a happy person. When other people are presenting I always give my full attention because I know how I would want my audience to act if I was presenting. I gave positive feed back on a lot of speeches in class. I show a huge appreciation to the value lessons learned in this course on everyone’s personal, academic and professional goals. It is so hard to tell something personal to people you don’t really know and I had great respect for those people. Everyone’s professional goals were awesome I find myself lucky to hear about. It is something that they have found a passion for and love to do.
Applied the principles and techniques of effective speech preparation and speech delivery as well as apply speech evaluation skills (being able to assess the effectiveness of one’s own speech delivery or performance and that of others)
I applied the principles and techniques of an effective speech. I prepared myself for each speech I delivered. I applied evaluation skills to each speech. Having them really made me work on things that I was struggling with. Watching the video of me really helped me also. I feel like I could see things that I could work on and things that I did strongly. Having access to assess myself in a visual manner was probably my favorite thing about this course. I am a visual learner so seeing the problem rather than hearing it from someone else really helped me to strengthen my presentations.
Nurtured and enriched communication potentials for personal, academic and career success
I definitely feel that I nurtured and enriched my communication potential for a personal and career success. I kept my topics on things that were interesting to me and relevant to what I want to do in my career. I think I did a great job building up for my portfolio. My passion for criminal justice really shows in each of my presentations which I feel could definitely help me down the road.
Communicated in a positive, ethical, respectful, and professional manner
I honestly think that I communicated in a positive, ethical, respectful, and professional manner at all times. I feel like those things are important to do in everyday life not just in this course. I feel like I was very respectful to other people just like other people were respectful to me. I would always try and dress nice for a presentation and make sure I looked professional.
Experienced success in this course as you effectively utilized technology and other class resources we have. Give 3 to 5 words that best describe your learning Experience and success in class and explain or give reasons WHY?
Knowledgeable: I would always make sure I knew what I was talking about and wanted to teach people things they did not know about. I feel that it is very important to have so that you can produce a well thought out presentation.
Organized: I was organized in the fact that I knew how I wanted to set up my presentations and that I wanted them all to be related to my major. The class has made me organized.
Passionate: With every topic I was very passionate and I was very good at choosing a topic that I was interested in.
Positive: I feel that I am naturally positive and I would bring my positivity to class.
I feel that in this class I have achieved a lot more than I thought I would. I believe that I disserve four stars. I think this because; I’ve worked very hard from the beginning of the semester.
